DSA Bike Rack Grant
We recently received the Placemaking Grant from the Downtown Stockton Alliance to design and fabricate three artistic bike racks to be installed in downtown Stockton. We have the tools and equipment, but we need your designs! Here's how to get involved.
Grant Overview
We were awarded the Placemaking Grant from the Downtown Stockton Alliance to design and fabricate three bike racks and a wayfinding sign to be installed in locations throughout downtown's corridor.
The first bike rack design will come from HATCH staff and team, the second from a featured local artist, Justin Grant, and the third from a community submission. Anyone can design a bike rack to submit, we just ask you review the information on this page to ensure your design fits with ADA compliance and serves as a functional art piece. If you are a metal fabricator and would like to fabricate your bike rack (if chosen), that's welcomed too!

Budget
We have allocated $1,000.00 per bike rack for design, build out, finishing, and installation. This leaves $450 for material, $50 for instillation hardware, $150 for the design, and $350 for the build out. We plan to powder coat each bike rack which is not reflected in the budget, yet. We are looking for a powder coater who will give us a good rate so if you know anyone, let us know!
The winning artist will win the $150 prize and may fabricate the bike racks themselves in our shop. If you are able to fabricate, you will also receive a $350.00 stipend to cover labor costs associated with build out. If you are unable to fabricate, no worries! We have plenty of metal workers who would be happy to help. Don't let fabrication leave you out of submitting a design!
Designing Process
Following our first informational Zoom meeting, we will host multiple design meetings to assist artists and makers in their design process. There are rules and regulations to consider and functionality can get in the way of design. Please attend these meetings to ensure your design is feasible and can enter the final contest. This is not mandatory but strongly encouraged.
